The History of Tuberculosis in Iowa

Oakdale Hall was once Iowa's largest hospital dedicated to the fight against tuberculosis. Now vacated, the building is set for demolition. We'll discuss tuberculosis in Iowa and the evolution of treatment of the disease. From bed rest and fresh air in the early 1900's to the modern antibiotics of today, we'll be looking at the progression from fear and hysteria of T.B., to understanding and treatment. Guests include Betty Lacina, former Occupational Therapist at Oakdale Sanitorium; Virginia Hedges, former Nursing Assistant at Oakdale; and Chuck Dayton, University of Iowa pharmacist and former Oakdale employee.

Charity Nebbe is the host of IPR's Talk of Iowa
