Symphonies of Iowa Featuring an Encore Broadcast of Des Moines Symphony Orchestra, October 7, 2013

On Iowa Public Radio’s Symphonies of Iowa series encore broadcast scheduled for Monday October 7, 2013 at 7 p.m., internationally acclaimed violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg joins the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra for a brilliant performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Premiered in 1845 by German violinist Ferdinand David, the Concerto features a number of innovative compositional techniques for its time, including an impressive cadenza in the middle of the first movement, and the use of three attaca movements which proceed from one to the next without pause. Selections from Wagner’s opera, Die Meistersinger, opens the concert and Franck’s dramatic Symphony in D minor brings the program to a close.
