CD of The Week from Austra

Austra is a Canadian electronic music band from Toronto, Ontario.  The band formed in 2009, and consists of Katie Stelmanis (vocals, keyboards), her former Galaxy bandmate Maya Postepski (drums) and former Spiral Beach bassist Dorian Wolf.  The band is named after Stelmanis' middle name Austra, which is also the name of the goddess of light in Latvian mythology.  Their new release, Olympia, is the follow up to their highly praised 2011 debut album Feel It Break.

CD of The Week from King Tuff

King Tuff is multifaceted songwriter and musician Kyle Thomas.  The name is a play on both his own name and "King Tut."  Was Dead is actually a reissue of the first King Tuff album, which preceded 2012's King Tuff.  The original release in 2008 was only on vinyl, and is very hard to find.  Was Dead is a treat for fans of catchy, guitar-based glam pop.

The Lonelyhearts Live on Studio One

The Lonelyhearts is the duo of John Lindenbaum (vocals & guitar) and Andre Perry (vocals & keyboards).  The band formed in San Francisco in the early 2000's, released some music, and relocated to different parts of the country.  Lindenbaum is now living in Fort Collins, CO, and Perry resides in Iowa City.  They come together to work on new material, record new records (the latest is Years In The Great Interior on Maximum Ames Records) and tour the country.  The Lonelyhearts will be stopping by the Cedar Falls studios of IPR for a live in-studio appearance Tuesday, July 23.

Valerie June grew up in the small town of Humboldt, Tennessee before moving to Memphis.  She spent years honing a distinctive sound that shifts between eras and genres, with a voice that has been described as somewhere between Dolly Parton and Billie Holiday.  June wrote or co-wrote all but one of the 11 tracks on her debut album, Pushin' Against A Stone, with a blend of rural roots, country, rock and blues styles.

CD of The Week from Shannon and The Clams

Shannon and The Clams take late '50s/ early '60s rock 'n roll as a starting point, adding elements of doo wop, girl groups, surf and punk music for their distinctive sound.  Shannon Shaw (also a member of Hunx and His Punx) is the powerful vocalist, and also plays bass in the trio.  The other members are Cody Blanchard (guitar, vocals) and Ian Amberson (drums, vocals).  Dreams In The Rat House is the third full-length album from the Oakland, California-based Shannon and The Clams.

CD of the Week from Mikal Cronin

Originally from Laguna Beach, California, Mikal Cronin's garage pop sound is influenced by indie rock of the '90s.  He is known for collaborating with Ty Segall, who also appears on Cronin's recordings.  After moving to San Francisco, Cronin recorded his second album.  MCII is his first for the Merge Records label, and with a few exceptions (including a couple of guitar solos from Segall), Cronin played all of the instruments.

CD of The Week from Daft Punk

The fourth album from French electronic duo Daft Punk is Random Access Memories.  Daft Punk recorded the album largely using live instrumentation with session musicians, and limited the use of electronics to drum machines, a modular synthesizer and vintage vocoders.  The record also features collaborations with Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Giorgio Moroder and more.
