Iowa's Symphonies Make Their Own Music This Season With New Commissions

Composer Steve Heitzeg with Maestro Joseph Giunta after the Des Moines Symphony premiers Heitzeg’s work “Symphony In Sculpture”. The Des Moines Symphony has commissioned Heitzeg to compose a sequel to that work this season.

Iowa Public Radio’s Symphonies of Iowa showcases an encore broadcast of the wcfsymphony’s “Spaces: Mahler 1 and World Premiere” concert this week. The program, which includes two Canzon by Gabrieli and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 also features the world premiere of a new work by composer Brooke Joyce called Une Cité Moderne. Brooke currently serves as the Composer-in-Residence at Luther College and is the newly elected president of the Iowa Composers Forum.

Join us at noon to hear Gian Carlo Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors" from the Des Moines Metro Opera. This modern classic tells the story of a poor mother and her crippled son, Amahl, discovering the healing power of love while giving shelter to the three Wise Men. This Performance Iowa broadcast was recorded on December 6-7, 2013, with Pierce Mansfield as Amahl, Julie Makerov as Amahl’s mother, and Todd Thomas as King Melchior.

Tune in Sunday at noon to hear the Des Moines Metro Opera recital of Sarah Jane McMahon on Performance Iowa.  Sarah has sung recently with the San Francisco Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, and Wiener Konzert Haus, in addition to singing opposite Placido Domingo in a gala concert. She has received The New York Times Kolozsvar Award for her performance as Galatea in Handel's Acis and Galatea and received their praise as "the most polished and flexible singer in the cast" and a "silvery-voiced soprano."

The beginning of a long collaboration between Strauss and the noted author Hugo von Hoffmansthal, the opera powerfully retells the Greek myth. Iowa’s own John Moore, who has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, sings the title role, and Jane Shaulis, who has also sung at the Met, is Filippyevna. Other cast members include Jan Cornelius, Elise Qualgliata, and Cody Austin.

This epic tale set from Pushkin’s novel in verse, tells the fateful story of youthful Tatiana falling in love with the mysterious and self-absorbed Onegin. Tchaikovsky’s irresistible melodies and trademark dances reflect the Russian atmosphere of his homeland.

Iowa Public Radio’s Arias in April features an encore broadcast of the Des Moines Metro Opera’s 2012 performance of La Rondine (The Swallow) on April 13, 2013 at 7 p.m. Des Moines Metro Opera chose to bring this opera to life once again for their Fortieth Anniversary 2012 season after also performing it in their first year. The cast includes Joyce El-Khoury as Magda de Civry, making her Des Moines Metro Opera debut after being featured in Opera News and John Viscardi performing the poet Prunier.

Iowa Public Radio will celebrate Public Radio Music Month on Saturday evenings at 7 with Arias in April. Brought back by popular demand, Iowa Public Radio Classical will present encore broadcasts of the Des Moines Metro Opera’s 40th Anniversary season. We’ll also air again the UNI Opera Theatre’s production of Die Fledermaus and the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre’s Merry Widow performance.
