The candidates battling for an open First District Congressional seat are meeting for their first debate tonight. Iowa Public Radio's Pat Blank has a profile of the race.

Democrat Pat Murphy and Republican Rod Blum are well known in the Dubuque area. Blum is a businessman and Murphy is a long time state lawmaker.  But the first district also includes Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and many other towns west of the Mississippi.  Each candidate is using a different method to introduce himself to voters. Blum tells constituents he feels an obligation to run.

Iowa 3rd District Congressional candidates Democrat Staci Appel and Republican David Young discussed raising the federal minimum wage, last night (Thursday) in Council Bluffs. The two debated for the first time on Iowa Public Television’s Iowa Press.

Since both Appel and Young aren’t terribly well known, it was important for each candidate to define themselves during the broadcast, and not let the other control the narrative.

Iowa will hold its primary on Tuesday, June 3. Democratic Senator Tom Harkin is retiring and that’s set off a domino effect of politicians vying for higher office and this midterm election could make history if voters send a woman to Washington. It’s just one of two states that have never done so or elected a woman as governor; the other is Mississippi.
