Whiskey Wars Afoot in Iowa?

Bottoms up! A new Iowa made whiskey will soon hit the shelves.

Cedar Ridge Vineyards, Winery and Distillery in Swisher, well known for its bourbon, announced this week it will be releasing a new malted rye whiskey. That news comes shortly after a Des Moines Registerexposérevealedanother well known whiskey, Templeton Rye, is not distilled in Iowa. Jeff Quint, proprietor of Cedar Ridge, says the release of his new malted liquor is unrelated.

“We’re good friends with those guys [in Templeton] and they’ve built a brand that’s very good for the state of Iowa. We’re taking a whole different attack.”

Quint estimates the new malted rye will sell for around $38 a bottle. A pre-sale begins September 15; Cedar Ridge will distribute 65 cases per month through April 2015.
