Many fans are excited about the new film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and many are rereading the mind-bending. heart-warming book in anticipation.
During this hour of Talk of Iowa, Charity Nebbe talks with author and bookseller Sarah Prineas and Jerri Heid, Youth Services Manager at the Ames Public Library, about literary touchstones, like A Wrinkle in Time, that shaped young readers.
"We only bring the experiences that we have [about death] to that book," Heid says about the Harry Potter books. Heid speaks about the potential books like the Harry Potter series hold to explore difficult concepts, like death, in a safe way for young readers.
That thinking underlies the selections for All Iowa Young Adults Read and All Iowa Kids Read. This is the inaugural year for All Iowa Reads selections' for younger readers. The Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse and Ghost by Jason Reynolds are this year's selections for children.
Callers also shared classic books from their childhoods, including Where the Red Fern Grows, Hatchet, and The Diary of Anne Frank.
