During this Talk of Iowa segment, host Charity Nebbe catches up with designer Matthew Christopher. Before Christopher became a couture dresser for celebrities and brides across the world, he made prom gowns for his dates in his hometown of Wellman. He learned to sew in 4-H as a kid.

“I was enthralled with Brides magazine at the age of 10,” Christopher says.

“I had the opportunity to leave track practice and tell the coach ‘I gotta go work on some of my future things that are going to be happening for my life’ and he was like ‘go,’” Christopher says. “The community [in Wellman] supported me so much and they were just so proud."

In the past few years, Christopher has opened up a couture fashion house in New York, appeared on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, and designed red carpet dresses for Broadway stars -- including Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Laura Thompson and Megan Hilty, who are all known for their roles as Glinda in the musical “Wicked.”

“I’ve got to work with the best Glindas of the Glindas from New York,” Christopher says.

Christopher’s latest “Matty” collection aims to offer affordable options for any bride. He’ll be in Iowa for a meet-and-greet onThursday, July 14 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Modern Dress in Boone, Iowa and will host a trunk show over the weekend.
