Veteran's Day Special: DMSO's Yankee Doodle Pops

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Iowa Public Radio’s Performance Iowa returns to the West Terrace of the Iowa State Capitol for an encore broadcast of The Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops concert from July 1st. The event featured rousing marches, as well as a mix of show tunes and patriotic selections celebrating “The Sound of America.”

The Des Moines Symphony and Maestro Joseph Giunta were joined by Governor Terry Branstad to salute members of the armed forces. Broadway vocalist Hugh Panaro performed favorites from West Side StoryFinian’s RainbowThe Music Man, and Company. The show kicked off with the “Oh Say, Can You Sing?” contest winner Mallory Wells performing The Star-Spangled Banner, and concluded with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, complete with howitzer canons and fireworks.
