Iowa Public Radio’s 2012-2013 Symphonies of Iowa season kicks off with Maestro Giunta and the Des Moines Symphony opening their seventy-fifth season with music from the Austrian film composer, Ernest Korngold. Korngold’s music for the 1935 film Captain Blood helped pioneer the symphonic film score as a new art form. Music from Wagner’s early opera Lohengrin is followed by the world premiere of a new work by Emmy Award-winning composerSteve Heitzeg, commissioned to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary season of the Des Moines Symphony. Closing the program is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, an exotic four-movement suite inspired by the Arabian Nights.
