Stop and Smell the Orchids

Just because its January, doesn't mean there aren't flowers in bloom.

Today on Talk of Iowa, Charity Nebbe talks with Aaron Steil, who manages programs for Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University. The annual Orchid Fest is right around the corner. Steil says that while orchids can seem intimidating, they can be well worth it to grow.

"When they bloom, they bloom for a really long time. You can have flowers for up to four months sometimes with most moth orchids." he explains.

Moth orchids are the most common variety or orchid and are usually the kind you'll find in garden stores.

Richard Jauron, a horticulturalist at Iowa State University, also joins this conversation and takes listener questions about caring for fruit trees, orchids and ficus plans.
