Iowa Public Radio's Opera in October broadcast series is proud to present the Des Moines Metro Opera's production of Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes on Saturday, October 12 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 13 at noon.

Based on George Crabbe's poem The Borough, this rather dark opera first premiered in London on June 7, 1945, just after Germany surrendered in World War II. The title character, Peter Grimes, is a fisherman from a small fishing village on the east coast of England, accused of murdering his apprentice at sea. Although the death was ruled an accident, Grimes continues to deal with the opinions of the community as he looks for both a new apprentice and to marry Ellen Orford, the local schoolmistress. The plot escalates amidst a great storm as Grimes' actions results in the death of a second apprentice, and a large mob comes to apprehend him. Under the direction of Kristine McIntyre, Roger Honeywell as Peter Grimes and Sinéad Mulhern as Ellen Orford give a stunning performance of this English masterpiece.
