Hicks says one surprising thing is the large amount of women in Chinese agriculture. Often they run the small family farms while their husbands work in industry in the city.

From buying Iowa feed to learning from farming practices to possibly buying into our hog market, China's ag ties to Iowa are strong.

Lynn Hicks, business editor at the Des Moines Register, recently spent 20 days in seven provinces, and he says Iowa is an essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to China’s need to feed it’s growing population.

"The question China faces is how will they produce what the country wants. Iowa is essential to that question."

On this episode of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with Hicks about his week-longseries and the lessons he learned on his trip.
