Monastery Candy

Monastery Candy
Chocolate-covered hazelnut meltaways handcrafted by the sisters of Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey.

Iowa is home to many talented chocolatiers and a number of them live in a place that might surprise you. Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey is a cloistered monastic community of Trappistine nuns near Dubuque.

After the cooled caramel is cut into strips, the sisters fed the strips into a wrapping machine.

In order to support their community, the sisters handcraft sweets including caramels, mints, truffles and chocolate-covered hazelnut meltaways. Sister Kathleen O’Neill, the production manager for Monastery Candy, discusses the history and traditions of these delicious treats with host Charity Nebbe.
