May IAS features Midwest International Piano Competition, Lowell Walter house, DMMO, and more!

As you dust off your gardening gloves for some May planting, let Iowa Public Radio sow a few upcoming arts-event seeds on the Iowa Arts Showcase. May’s line-up includes:

· UNI’s Assistant Professor of Piano Dmitri Vorobiev and Associate Professor of Piano Sean Botkin as they discuss the inaugural Midwest International Piano Competition

· Kathryn Hund and James Dains of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as they reveal some of their upcoming summer events at the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Lowell Walter House located in the Cedar Rock State Park

· The Des Moines Metro Opera’s Artistic Director, Michael Egel, as he shares details about their 42nd Summer Festival Season line-up

· And we welcome Myrna Johnson back to the state and to our Iowa Public Radio team as IPR’s Executive Director as she talks about her career as a not-for-profit professional.

University of Northern Iowa piano professors Dmitri Vorobiev and Sean Botkin share facts about the inaugural Midwest International Piano Competition, taking place June 1-7 at the University of Northern Iowa’s School of Music. Arthur Green, Alexander Toradze, and Miroslav Breicha, three internationally acclaimed judges, will hear competitors from around the world perform at UNI’s Great Hall of the Gallgher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

Kathryn Hund and James Dains of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources open the doors this spring to the Lowell Walter House in Cedar Rock State Park. The Friends of Cedar Rock host a variety of events each summer to support the “Usonian” style home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Des Moines Metro Opera’s 42nd Summer Festival Season kicks off with Artistic Director Michael Egel leading the way. Running simultaneously during June and July, the company is presenting Verdi’s La Traviata, Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, and Rossini’s Le Comte Ory. The DMMO’s 2nd Stage will also present Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s classic, entitled The Tragedy of Carmen.

And Myrna Johnson, Iowa Public Radio’s new Executive Director, takes a minute to reflect on her Midwest origins and why she loves Public Radio. An Iowa native and graduate of Wartburg College, Johnson has over 30 years of experience as a non-profit professional, including a stint for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington D.C.

Join us on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase.
