Senator Rick Santorum speaking at the annual Lincoln Dinner in Des Moines, Iowa. Santorum says to protect the United States from ISIS, thousands of troops should be deployed to the Middle East and the U.S. should also arm Iraqi Sunnis and Kurds.

Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania, announced that he is running for President today. That brings the list of declared GOP presidential candidates to seven, with former New York Governor George Pataki expected to officially throw his hat into the ring tomorrow.

Kedron Bardwell of Simpson College says that if any of those candidates want to win, they’re going to have to energize younger voters. “Young people are looking for someone new. From what I’ve heard around campus here, I don’t see a Rick Santorum or a Mike Huckabee catching fire in Iowa,” he says.

During this River to River Bardwell talks with host Ben Kieffer and Tim Hagle, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa. Also discussed during this program: the Family Leader’s announcement not to ask candidates to sign a “marriage oath” and what it means that Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders are entering the democratic side of the race.
