UPDATE (1/19/2016): The tower crew expects the weather to be adequate for tower work this week! They are on the way!
KSUI 91.7 FM had a severe breakdown in the large transmission line that links the transmitter (on the ground) to the broadcast antenna (1300’ up the tower). We had short-lived success operating at reduced power, then we had to stop operation at the main transmitter site and switch to our backup site near Oakdale, just north of Iowa City.
The backup site doesn’t have the reach of the main site; we’re limited to a coverage radius of about 20 miles in the Iowa City area. This impacts the reception of the 91.7 FM signal in the Quad Cities as well. We will need a tower crew specifically trained to work with broadcast equipment to come and ascend the main tower to locate and repair all failure points. Unfortunately, the tower crew, from out of state, won’t be available until the weather improves.
We are working to correct this problem as soon as possible. In the meantime, one option is to Listen Live to IPR Classical at www.iowapublicradio.org. For information about how to stream online, visit http://iowapublicradio.org/online-listening.
