ISU Introduces a New Head Coach

It didn’t take the Iowa State University athletic department long to name a replacement for outgoing head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg.

A week after Hoiberg officially left to take the helm of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, Murray State head coach Steve Prohm was introduced as the new leader of the Cyclones.

The 40-year-old Prohm has been coaching at the Kentucky school for nine years, the last four as head coach.

So he says a move to a new community will take an adjustment.

“I got to learn the stores. Is it High Five?" he asks. "Oh, Hy-Vee. High five is what we’ll do after the games with the student section.”

Prohm grew emotional when talking about uprooting his wife, Katie, from her hometown.

“You live a place 10 years, it’s hard enough," he says. "The longest place I’ve ever lived is Murray. You live someplace your whole life, it’s tough. Thank you so much for letting me live out this dream.”

In his final season at Murray State, Prohm led the Racers to a 29-and-6 record, which included a 25-game winning streak.

Prohm emerged from a list of seven finalists for the ISU job. They were interviewed by Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard over the weekend in Atlanta.
