Iowa Arts Showcase December 1, 2012

Iowa Public Radio’s December Iowa Arts Showcase investigates the Des Moines Metro Opera’s Opera Iowa Three Little Pigsadventure for a 13-week whirlwind tour starting in January. The DMMO’s artistic director, Michael Egel, outlines the Opera Iowa Troupe’s arts education goals as they perform at community centers, concert halls, gymnasiums and classrooms all across the state.

The Artistic Director and Conductor of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus, Dr. Rebecca Gruber and the President of the Board, Eric Olmscheid share their 2012-13 concert lineup and reflect on their musical mission which includes promoting social tolerance.

The Iowa State Center’s Outreach Coordinator, Sara Compton,
offers an inside glimpse into their amazing Martha-Ellen Tye Youth Matinee Series, the C.Y.’s Kids Club memberships, their Met Opera Auditions, and the Center’s annual holiday tradition of presenting Tchaikovsky’s famous Nutcracker Ballet.

And St. Mark's Lutheran Churchin Marion’s Music Director, Barbara Ritchie and Organ Committee Chair, Jim Ogann, delve into the inspiration and dedication of their congregation to purchase and restore an historic million dollar 1928 Opus 695 Skinner organ. Barbara sketches out her holiday organ recital scheduled for Sunday afternoon, December 2nd.
