A number of political theorists have argued that a healthy society needs not only to protect, but also to encourage dissent. We'll look at two eras in Iowa's history where dissenters have flourished: the Civil War and the Vietnam War.University of Northern Iowa History Professor Wallace Hettle will look at the abolitionists and the Copperheads or Peace Democrats of the mid-19th century; and John Johnson, also a UNI History Professor, will discuss examples of dissent to the Vietnam War and the importance of the Supreme Court decision in the case "Tinker v. Des Moines."
