Grassley And Garland Planning Breakfast Meeting

Iowa Public Radio / Amy Mayer

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley and Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland are meeting for breakfast soon. But Grassley says the meeting won’t change his mind about not holding confirmation hearings for Garland.

The Iowa Republican heads the Senate Judiciary Committee. Grassley says he spoke with Garland over the phone yesterday, though the two still have to set a date for their breakfast.

"I think I made it very clear that that's what I'm going to do, is tell him what the situation is, and why we aren't moving. And he's going to tell me why we should, and that's his job," says Grassley. "But I think he's going to tell me a lot about him, and I'm going to listen."

Grassley calls Garland a “very decent person,” but says voters should have a say in who fills the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, when they elect a new president in November.
