Is Government Helping or Hurting Race Relations?

Barack Obama takes the oath of office administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. at the Capitol, January 20, 2009

There’s no denying the racial tensions flaring in the United States. The question of how to solve them, however, has yet to be answered.

According to political scientist Steffen Schmidt, one thing is for certain. “The past six years suggests that Barack Obama’s election has actually sharpened race awareness and revived the intensity of race politics.”

During this hour of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with Schmidt about his views on racial relations in American politics. Associate Political Science Professor Tim Hagle from the University of Iowa also joins the conversation. Other topics this hour include the turkey pardoning drama involving President Obama’s daughters and Mitch McConnell’s assertion that he is “perplexed” by the president’s actions on immigration.
