DMMO’s “Orphée et Eurydice” Appears on IPR’s Arias in April

Claire McAdams

The third opera in Iowa Public Radio’s 2017 Arias in April series showcases the Des Moines Metro Opera’s production of Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice. The opera, dating from 1762, will be broadcast on Saturday, April 15 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 16 at 11:00 p.m.

Driven by love and overwhelmed with grief and uncertainty, Orphée descends into the underworld on a heroic mission to return his beloved to the land of the living. His passionate music wins their freedom, but the true test has just begun. Based on the Greek myth of Orpheus, this production takes us on a quest through a series of worlds ranging from the sinister to the pastoral. The stunning mezzo-soprano, Jennifer Johnson Cano, assumes the challenging title role of Orphée, with the beautiful soprano Susannah Biller appearing as Eurydice and the whimsical and sparkling soprano Cree Carrico portraying Amour, the god of love. The DMMO’s guest Music Director and Conductor, Gary Thor Wedow, led the orchestra while Chas Rader-Shieber served as Stage Director.
