"Like Cooked Pudding": the Beauty of Iowa Fens

When we think of Iowa landscape, Iowa prairie and Iowa farm field immediately come to mind. But there's an unexpected gem of Iowa land that often gets overlooked: the fen.

Rebecca Kauten is a fen enthusiast, so much so that she has a fen named after her: Becky's Fen in Layfayette County.

"Some people think of a fen like a bog, and in some ways they're very similar. [...] A fen is groundwater-fed, whereas a bog is surface water-fed."

For this special Talk of Iowa segment, Charity Nebbe traveled out to Ciha Fen in Johnson County to talk with Kauten about the particularities of this under-appreciated wetland.
