Antibiotic Resistance

In Iowa, the average amount of tuberculosis (TB) cases is 30-50 a year. In the U.S., TB affects an estimated 10 to 15 million people.

On River to River, we’ll talk with Guru Rao and Ed Yu researchers from Iowa State who are studying a certain strain of tuberculosis that is multi-drug antibiotic resistant. Then, we’ll broaden the discussion to general antibiotic use in the U.S. and how antibiotic resistant bacteria will be a growing cause of concern in the future with UI professor of epidemiology Michael Pentella and Jason Newland, director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.
