Philadelphia songwriter and musician Kurt Vile has been making his own music since he was a teenager, creating home recordings and self-releasing them in cassette form.  His new release for the Matador label is his fifth full-length album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze.  The record is comprised of sweeping, expansive songs that are both intimate and conversational.  Even the more lengthy tracks remain compelling.  Wakin On A Pretty Daze can be viewed as Kurt Vile's distinctive take on the classic model of guitar-based songwriting.

CD of the Week from The Black Angels

Credit Alexandra Valenti, NPR.org

The Black Angels are a neo-psychedelic band from Austin, TX, re-creating a heavy, reverb-laden 1960's inspired brand of psychedelia.  After all, Austin was the home of Roky Erickson and his band The 13th Floor Elevators back in the original heyday of this music.  The Black Angels have been very consistent in their sound on their records, but they also continue to refine their approach on their fourth full-length release, Indigo Meadow.
