People of IPR
Karen Impola is the host of Iowa Public Radio's The Folk Tree and Classical Music in the Afternoon. Karen began working at KUNI in 1990. Before that, she hosted Folk and progressive music shows at WXPN in Philadelphia, and was a production assistant at NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross.”
Karen spent much of her childhood and adolescence holed up in her room with a record player. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology & Anthropology from Swarthmore College, where she also did her first radio show, at 6:00 a.m. on a ten-watt station, to an audience which numbered in the single digits. In her spare time she chauffeurs teenagers and cans tomatoes.
University Concert showcases the best our state has to offer with performances by student ensembles, faculty and visiting artists. Each week, the future stars of the concert stage and their talented instructors reveal the wealth of artistry and ability that can be found on the campuses of our colleges and universities in live performances recorded in concert halls around our state.
Host Karen Impola features music that is rooted in tradition, but spreads out in a variety of modern directions, including blues and bluegrass; singer-songwriters new and old; rockers getting back to their acoustic roots; plus excursions into Celtic and world music. The show also features exclusive recordings made at venues throughout the IPR listening area, and occasionally, live musical guests in IPR's very own studios.
