Every week Iowa Public Radio's Java Blend serves up fresh-brewed performances and conversation with musicians from around the state and around the world.

Recorded before a live audience, the one-hour show offers an eclectic mix of live tunes from the vibrant independent music scene. Host Ben Kieffer infuses the performances with lively chats to find out about the artists' music and lives.

Raised on a beef and wheat farm in North Dakota by folk musicians, Andra Suchy began touring and performing at festivals at a young age. Classically trained and a veteran of musical theater, the guitar-playing singer moved to Minneapolis in 1996, where she has gone on to make a name for herself as one of the finest vocalists around.

A regular performer on the national radio show A Prairie Home Companion, Andra has performed around the world, singing with such artists as Brad Paisley, Mindy Smith, Emmylou Harris, Chris Thile and soprano Renee Fleming. She has recorded with a wide range of indie, rock, blues and folk acts, including The Honeydogs, Jonny Lang, Peter Ostroushko and Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner.

Although mainly known as a vocalist, Andra has been quietly honing her songwriting craft, self-releasing a solo album in 2006 called Patchwork Story. Just signed to Grammy-winning label Red House Records, she released her new album “Little Heart” on March 27, 2012.

This performance will be recorded before a live audience on Friday, May 18. It will air on Java Blend on Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16, on IPR's Studio One.
