Event Description

By Dr. Lawrence McDonnell, ISU Department of History Recent Civil War scholarship has argued that military service -- and especially the experience of battle -- acted as a "melting pot" for immigrant soldiers, transforming Irishmen and Germans into Americans. But historians have missed the central role of the Civil War in creating an American working class. At Knowledge on Tap, Dr. McDonnell considers how military service and the experience of battle made Germans into Americans but also made them into a politically radicalized working class.
