Every week Iowa Public Radio's "Java Blend" with Ben Kieffer serves up fresh-brewed performances and conversation with musicians from around the state and around the country. Recorded before a live audience at The Java House in downtown Iowa City, the one-hour show offers an eclectic mix of live tunes from the vibrant independent music scene. Ben Kieffer infuses the performances with lively chats to find out about the artists' music and lives.

The best way to describe Ben Cook-Feltz's music may be, “Paul Simon singing piano ballads about broken hearts, and pants, to thunderous percussion.” A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Cook-Feltz has spent the past seven years living in Minneapolis, performing throughout the state and metro area with a variety of backing ensembles, large and small, sure and unsure.

This Saturday at 2 PM, we'll re-broadcast his percussive "Java Blend" performance from October of 2011.

A Thing Called The Divine Fits and IPR's Java Blend

The band, Divine Fits, has been billed as an indie rock super group. The band was co-founded by Britt Daniel, most famous as the frontman for the band Spoon, and Canadian Rocker Dan Boeckner, of the bands Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs. Last year they released their first album, “A Thing Called Divine Fits.”

In the second part of the program, the music continues! The host of IPR's "Java Blend", Ben Kieffer, shares his experiences over the years, interviewing musicians from Iowa and across the country.

Mutts on Java Blend Saturday, March 16, 2013

Mutts are a keyboard-centric, mercurial band often described as a unique blend of Tom Waits and Nirvana. Although keyboards drive their sound, Mutts draw comparisons to bluesy rockers likes Queens of the Stone Age and The Black Keys for music that is alternately danceable, psychedelic, and heavy.

They have opened for artists such as Maps & Atlases and Psychic Twin and recently performed at the Do Division Fest in Chicago. Their latest album Separation Anxiety was on the CMJ Top 200 for six consecutive weeks.

The Nadas on Java Blend March 9, 2013

The Nadas have carved a thriving career out of what was once their college pastime, consistently filling clubs and colleges across the country selling more than 125,000 albums through their own Authentic Records label.

This year, the group is preparing to release a new album, to be titled Lovejoy Sessions. Originally formed some 15 years ago in Ames, Iowa, their catchy, driving tunes feature great lyrics, a solid beat, and tight vocals.

Slip Silo on Java Blend February 16, 2013

Iowa City electronic/jazz/rock quartet Slip Silo celebrated the release of its first full length album, Monsoons, on April 14th, 2012, the follow-up to the group’s 2009 self-titled EP. Formed in the summer of 2008, Slip Silo is comprised of talented, thoughtful musicians who studied jazz and who have appeared in groups such as Koplant No, OSG, Big Funk Guarantee, The Critical Hour, New Beat Society, and many more. The band combines a variety of influences to create a unique sound that listeners find delightfully difficult to classify.
