Iowa Arts Showcase on IPR Classical

For one hour each month Jacqueline Halbloom will highlight the efforts and activities of non-profit arts and culture organizations throughout Iowa.  She will focus on performing arts organizations, festivals, visual arts organizations, and other cultural centers.  Iowa Arts Showcase will shine a light on the contributions of arts organizations to Iowa communities.

Stephens Auditorium’s “Silver Code”, the curtain that has opened world class acts for 45 years. Kate Greder, Textile Conservation Fellow, Jason Alread, Iowa State Associate Professor of Architecture, and Lynette Pohlman, the Director of University Museums at ISU, discuss the meticulous process of restoring the treasured curtain, as well as the curtain’s role in ISU’s architecturally significant Stephens Auditorium.

As we kick off the New Year, Iowa Public Radio’s January Iowa Arts Showcase takes you behind the scenes with guest stage director Bill Ferrara as he shares his take on the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre’s production of Bizet’s Carmen. A classic tale of love, betrayal, and revenge, the gypsy seductress Carmen, sung by Iowa native Janera Kellerman, tires of her soldier lover Don José in favor of the handsome toreador Escamillio.

Prepare to move to the beat of a different drummer on the September Iowa Arts Showcase as Iowa Public Radio Producer John Pemble sits down with Matt Andreini to discuss the Iowa/Hungary Percussion Project. Andreini, a University of Northern Iowa percussion instructor, has partnered with Hungarian percussionist Gabor Palotas to commission works from three Iowan and three Hungarian composers for percussion duo. Andreini and Palotas performed these pieces in Hungary over the summer, and have already begun a series of Iowa performances at UNI.

It’s road trip time with the August edition of the Iowa Arts Showcase. Our first stop will be the Salisbury Concours d’Elegance: A Celebration of the Art and Design of the Automobile, hosted by the Salisbury House in Des Moines. Katie Wengert, director of marketing, and David Baum, co-chair of the Concours committee, will fill us in on this celebration of classic motor vehicles. The display this year includes Jaguars, Lincolns, station wagons, antiques, Model T’s, collectibles, and vintage motorcycles.

The June edition of Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase kicks off with Ted Swetz and Jody Hovland discussing Riverside Theatre’s upcoming productions of Hamlet and The School for Scandal at Riverside Theatre in the Park. Hovland is the artistic director and one of the original three founders of RiversideTheatre. Swetz, a Professor of Theater at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and past theatrical director at Riverside, is returning this year to direct The School for Scandal.

On the May edition of Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase, we will hear from Laura Johnson on the University of Iowa Opera Theatre’s production of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. Johnson is a visiting professor to the university and the guest director to the ensemble. The performance took place at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City on May 2, 3, 4, and 5.

  Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase, April edition will celebrate Public Radio Music Month with an appearance by the Amara Piano Quartet (formerly known as the Ames Piano Quartet) complete with their new members, pianist Mei-Hsuan Huang and violinist Boro Martinic. Mei-Hsuan and Boro will join with long-time piano quartet and Iowa State music faculty, violist Jonathan Sturm and cellist George Work to discuss the challenges and rewards of forming a new piano quartet and the joys of performing chamber music.
