An Unexpected History of Carnivore America

The battle surrounding meat and livestock production ranks among the longest-waged and hardest fought in American history. Today on River to River, Ben Kieffer talks with historian and author, Maureen Ogle. Her new book is titled In Meat We Trust.

In it she traces the story of meat in this country from the colonial period. She’ll explain how/when/why the American way of meat shifted from source of pride to axis of controversy. She starts back in the colonial era to trace the debate over such things as the role of meat in a healthy diet, meat-packing processes, and the use of antibiotics.
