Symphonies of Iowa presents DMSO's "From Russia With Ilya" 1/26 and 1/27
This week on Iowa Public Radio’s Symphonies of Iowa, internationally renowned pianist Ilya Yakushev takes the stage with Maestro Joseph Giunta and the Des Moines Symphony in their 76th season debut program, From Russia With Ilya.
Marking his 25th Anniversary season, Maestro Giunta opens the concert with Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan & Ludmilla. Glinka was Russia’s first important classical composer. The brilliant and racing overture is one of his most famous pieces. Ilya, winner of the World Piano Competition, takes the stage to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major. A virtuosic work, Prokofiev’s third concerto is also humorous and lyrical. The concert closes with Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor. After receiving harsh criticism for his first symphony, Rachmaninoff’s depression almost prevented him from ever writing again. Luckily he recovered, and his second symphony is now known as one of the most popular twentieth century symphonies. Join us Sunday, January 26 at noon and Monday, January 27 at 7 p.m. for this Symphonies of Iowa broadcast on Iowa Public Radio.
