Symphonies of Iowa Encore Broadcast for October 14, 2013
On Monday, October 14, 2014 at 7 p.m. Iowa Public Radio’s Symphonies of Iowa presents an encore broadcast of the Waterloo0-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, narrator Scott Cawelti, and the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra performance. Commissioned by the Blanden Memorial Art Museum and the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Jonathan Chenette’s Rural Symphony is a three-movement work inspired by photographs of daily life in rural Iowa. This uniquely Midwestern musical portrait includes the movements “Milking Time” and “Becoming Prairie.” A suite from Copland’s only full-length opera, The Tender Land, will depict the story of a young girl about to leave her home on a Midwestern farm. Closing the program is Dvorak’s Suite in A, commonly referred to as the “American Suite.” It was influenced by the composer’s visit to the United States, a trip which included a summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa. UNI Professor Emeritus, Scott Cawelti also narrates the poetry and verse of James Hearst, Erik Johns, and John Peterson during the entire concert.
