Iowa Arts Showcase April 6, 2013 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

  Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase, April edition will celebrate Public Radio Music Month with an appearance by the Amara Piano Quartet (formerly known as the Ames Piano Quartet) complete with their new members, pianist Mei-Hsuan Huang and violinist Boro Martinic. Mei-Hsuan and Boro will join with long-time piano quartet and Iowa State music faculty, violist Jonathan Sturm and cellist George Work to discuss the challenges and rewards of forming a new piano quartet and the joys of performing chamber music. They will also share details about their upcoming concert on April 7th at 7 p.m. at the Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. You may attend that concert in person, or tune in to Iowa Public Radio’s Performance Iowa to catch IPR’s live Amara Piano Quartet broadcast.

We’ll take a glimpse into the career of internationally acclaimed guitarist, Vladimir Gorbach. Vladimir talks about growing up in Siberia and his challenges as he went on to win the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America competition. We catch up with Vladimir on his fifty-concert tour throughout America, Canada, Mexico, South America and China. Vladimir talks about his favorite Iowa-born author, Bill Bryson, and his solo recital on April 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Lutheran Church in Des Moines sponsored by the Heart of Iowa Classical Guitar Society.

We’ll learn how The Chicago Tribune arts and jazz critic, Howard Reich, unraveled his mother’s terrifying and unspeakable past by writing the book and producing the documentary called Prisoner of Her Past.  Howard outlines his unimaginable journey and talks about his upcoming Iowa appearance as part of the Norman Cohn Family Annual Holocaust Remembrance and Education Lecture scheduled on April 15th at 7:30 p.m. at Sabin Hall on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls.

We’ll delve with guitarist Paul Richards into the backgrounds of the California and Montreal Guitar Trios and their amazing four-year guitar-concert collaborations. Paul also fills us in on their April 18th appearance to be held at Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State Center in Ames.

And we’ll explore the amazing events included in this year’s 8th Annual Mission Creek Festival with co-founder and director, Andre Perry . Andre provides highlights from their 2013 festival celebration of music, literature and food which returns to downtown Iowa City on April 2nd through the 7th.
