Deborah Whaley/Tyler Hakes

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest sorority founded by African- American women. Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood like any other sorority, but this one was founded by a handful of women one generation out from slavery who wanted to make the most of their education and lives. We'll explore that history and the culture of black sororities today with Deborah Whaley, Prof. of American Studies at the University of Iowa and author of "Disciplining Women: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Black Counterpublics, and Cultural Politics of Black Sororities." Also on the program, we speak with Tyler Hakes of Iowa City, editor-in-chief of "aboveGround" a rapidly-growing underground hip-hop magazine.
