Stay dry this April as Iowa Public Radio kicks off another Iowa Arts Showcase. This month our features include:
- Metropolitan Chorale’s 60th Anniversary Concert: Sunday, April 13, 3 p.m., First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls
- Judicaël Perroy guitar recital: April 19, 7:30 p.m., Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, Des Moines
- UI Opera Theatre’s “Die Fledermaus”: May 2-4, Englert Theatre, Iowa City
- Vadym Kholodenko: April 13, 3 p.m., Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Cedar Falls
Dr. Lee Nelson, music director and conductor of the 100-voice Metropolitan Chorale, shares the program and the background behind their special 60th anniversary concert. Made up of both amateur and professional voices from across the Cedar Valley, the group performs two concerts a year of major works at venues in both Cedar Falls and Waterloo. This year the choir will perform Faure’s Requiem and selections from Handel’s Messiah.
Steven Kennedy, president of Heart of Iowa Classical Guitar Society, discusses the upcoming recital of Parisian guest guitarist Judicaël Perroy. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, Perroy is world-renowned as both a performer and educator of classical guitar.
University of Iowa Opera Theatre director Bill Theisen gives us a behind the scenes look at the UI Opera Theatre’s production of Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus. Theisen directs this timeless classic of revenge, seduction, and mistaken identity in this operatic farce. Performances will be May 2, 3, and 4 at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City.
Vadym Kholodenko, gold-medalist winner of the 2013 Van Cliburn piano competition, discusses his experience with the competition. Kholodenko is a critically acclaimed pianist and recording artist. He will take the stage of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 13 to showcase his talent for the Cedar Valley.
And IPR’s Arts and Culture Reporter, John Pemble, interviews music school graduates who are using their training to perform as folk musicians.
