Orchestra Iowa http://iowapublicradio.org en Mighty Wurlitzer Returns to CR in Mahler, Walton http://iowapublicradio.org/post/mighty-wurlitzer-returns-cr-mahler-walton
The 2008 Cedar Rapids flood badly damaged the Wurlitzer organ at the Paramount Theatre, but it is now fully restored, and this March was unveiled in concert. For its victorious return, Orchestra Iowa chose two masterpieces that need a huge organ: Walton’s splendid Te Deum and Mahler’s “Resurrection” symphony. With two choruses, two soloists and full orchestra, this colossal performance brought together the largest ensemble ever to appear at the Paramount. Jacqueline Halbloom produced and hosts IPR's broadcast as part of our Symphonies of Iowa series.
Sun, 20 Apr 2014 16:43:00 +0000 Barney Sherman 39411 at http://iowapublicradio.org Mighty Wurlitzer Returns to CR in Mahler, Walton Iowa Orchestras Make Music - about Iowa http://iowapublicradio.org/post/iowa-orchestras-make-music-about-iowa
Iowa's orchestras are commissioning works about Iowa; but how can music without words convey anything about a place? And Giuseppe Martucci's Nocturne is an inexplicably neglected beauty, as Tim Hankewich and the orchestra demonstrate in this concert recorded at the Paramount in Cedar Rapids.
